Welcome to Signal to Alpha, your essential market briefing. I'm Lady Muriel, cutting through the noise to deliver what moves markets today. Let's get you your alpha before the opening bell. Here's your rundown for Tuesday, October twentieth. Inflation data is landing right in the middle of election season, chip stocks are roaring back from their beating, and credit markets are sending a signal nobody's quite seen before. Let's dig in. Start with the money in your wallet. The latest Consumer Price Index shows prices up three point seven percent over the past year, and six tenths of a percent in September alone. Gasoline jumped over nine percent last month, largely thanks to the Hormuz shipping disruptions we've been tracking. Diesel's climbing too, which pressures freight and farming costs, and that trickles into groceries. Housing isn't helping either, with the median home price near four hundred seventeen thousand dollars and mortgage rates sitting at seven point four percent. Republicans argue these pressures are temporary war-related costs; Democrats and some economists point to a New York Fed study showing tariffs alone added nearly three percentage points to goods inflation. With midterms two weeks away, this is the number campaigns are built or broken on. Now, some relief in tech. After a brutal two-week slide, chip stocks are bouncing hard this morning. Nvidia's up around two percent in premarket, AMD's up four percent, Intel's up four and a half, and Micron's climbing nearly four percent too. J P Morgan also just upgraded Intel for the first time in four years, citing real strength in its data-center and A I chip business under C E O Pat Gelsinger. It's a notable mood shift after weeks of chip-sector pain. But don't get too comfortable. Credit markets are flashing something strategists call uncharted territory. The riskiest junk bonds are seeing spreads blow out, while safer corporate debt stays remarkably calm. That's an unusual split with no clean historical comparison. Related to this, J P Morgan ran the math on what happens if CoreWeave defaults on its fifty-two billion dollar debt pile. Their conclusion: manageable. Major banks hold one to three billion dollars of exposure each, well secured by physical G P Us, so a default wouldn't be catastrophic, but it underscores real stress building beneath the A I financing boom. One bright spot for your portfolio's calendar: history says the six months following midterm elections tend to be one of the strongest stretches for stocks, so keep that tailwind in mind heading into November. Quick crypto check: Bitcoin's trading around eighty-one thousand three hundred ninety-six dollars, Ethereum near two thousand three hundred eighty-eight dollars. And remember: what if the thing that makes you unpredictable is actually your greatest asset? Carry that into your trading day. That's your Signal to Alpha for today.
