Welcome to Signal to Alpha, your essential market briefing. I'm Lady Muriel, cutting through the noise to deliver what moves markets today. Let's get you your alpha before the opening bell. Here's your rundown for Thursday, October twenty-second. Oil prices are stubbornly high even as Gulf exports bounce back. I B M can't catch a break on Wall Street. And corporate earnings are showing us two very different faces of the AI boom. Let's dig in. Start with energy, because this one affects every driver listening. Persian Gulf oil exports have actually recovered to within ten percent of pre-war levels, with Saudi Arabia pumping ten percent above its usual pace to offset Iran's exports, which collapsed to zero after July's blockade. You'd think prices would ease. They haven't. Brent crude is trading above one hundred ten dollars a barrel this morning after fresh Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure, including an intercepted drone strike on Aramco's Shaybah field. The culprit is shipping cost: tankers are taking convoluted routes around the Strait of Hormuz, and global crude inventories just fell for a third straight week. Deutsche Bank says a real ceasefire could eventually push Brent down to seventy-four dollars next year, but an extended conflict could send it toward one hundred thirty. That's the range you're trading in right now. Next, a stock that just won't stop sliding. I B M shares dropped another five percent in premarket trading to two hundred thirty-eight dollars and eighty-five cents, as investors continue digging into July's disappointing earnings. The stock is now down roughly fifteen percent year to date, a sign confidence hasn't returned. Now, two contrasting AI stories worth pairing together. Meta posted revenue up twenty-six percent year over year to sixty-four point six billion dollars, powered by AI-driven ad targeting, and the stock popped as much as four percent after hours before settling around two percent higher. Management is now teasing its Muse AI assistant as an opportunity potentially bigger than advertising itself. On the flip side, Barclays announced it's cutting five thousand jobs by year-end, about five percent of its workforce, directly citing AI automation of back-office functions. So on one hand, AI is minting new revenue, and on the other, it's actively eliminating payroll. Worth watching as more Q-three earnings roll in. And if you want a longer-term gut check, veteran investor Rob Arnott argues history shows the customers of new technology outperform the innovators themselves, a warning shot for anyone over-concentrated in today's AI darlings. Quick crypto check: Bitcoin's trading around eighty-one thousand six hundred thirty-eight dollars, Ethereum near two thousand three hundred ninety-eight dollars. And here's your line for the day: so here's the thing, most people are spinning in the same predictable circles, and then there's you, ready to break the pattern. Today's your day to trade routine for momentum. That's your Signal to Alpha for today. Subscribe for tomorrow's essential market briefing.
